Caelan Doris Included in Ireland Squad But McCarthy Misses Out
Newly reappointed head coach the Ireland coach has named skipper Caelan Doris in his Ireland roster for the fall Tests, however Joe McCarthy has been excluded.
Doris, who has not played since having shoulder surgery in early May, has come back to Leinster training, with doubts lingering whether he will be ready to face the All Blacks in Chicago on November 1.
Lock McCarthy, on the other hand, was not considered after not recovering from the foot injury suffered during the first Lions Test against Australia in the summer.
Northern province player Cormac Izuchukwu and Munster wing Nash are also absent because of injury, and number 15 Keenan was previously excluded after undergoing a hip operation after the Lions tour.
Dublin province forward Paddy McCarthy - Joe's younger brother - is the sole uncapped member in the 34-man group, but the Irish Rugby Football Union states new Munster duo Edwin Edogbo and Brian Gleeson and once-capped western province wing Shayne Bolton will head to the US as "reserves".
Following facing the All Blacks at the Chicago stadium in a rematch of their 2016 meeting, Ireland host Japan, Australia and world champions South Africa in the Irish capital.
"It's an exciting group to the squad and it's a chance for the veteran members and for the newcomers on the summer tour to Georgia and Portugal," commented the coach, back to national team duties after a break to lead the Lions tour to the southern hemisphere.
In a mostly experienced selection, Leinster's Sam Prendergast and the southern club's Jack Crowley will once again vie for the starting number 10 spot. The fly-half role is remains up for grabs, with the two players set to play against each other for the first time in the upcoming United Rugby Championship match at Croke Park.
Ciaran Frawley is the third number 10 selected with Farrell deciding not to calling up the province's Byrne.
At scrum-half, Farrell has picked British and Irish Lion Jamison Gibson-Park and Craig Casey, who led Ireland to the summer Test victories over Georgia and the Lobos. There is also a return for the western province's Blade, who is preferred to club-mate Murphy.
Henshaw, Bundee Aki, Garry Ringrose and Stuart McCloskey form an veteran cohort of centre choices. Osborne is another option in the midfield, but the 23-year-old is also a frontrunner to deputise for the full-back at full-back.
Outside backs James Lowe, Hansen, O'Brien and Stockdale are named. O'Brien impressed on his first Ireland outings during the summer with two tries apiece in the wins over Georgia and Portugal.
Paddy McCarthy is the sole new name in the Irish forwards. The front rower has started a couple of Leinster's three United Rugby Championship games so far and featured in the second string's loss by England in Bristol earlier this year.
McCarthy was included in interim boss O'Connell's summer selection, yet did not earn a international appearance.
Southern province lock Ahern, who received his debut appearances in those Tests, is retained, while experienced Northern province second row Iain Henderson is back after sitting out the summer matches.
Conan, who played in all three Lions matches over the summer, is set to cover for Doris if the skipper does not regain full fitness soon enough to play New Zealand.
The Ireland squad will assemble in Dublin on the start of the week before flying to the US on the following day.
