Ex- Federal Bureau of Investigation chief James the ex-FBI chief has pleaded not guilty to giving untrue testimony to congressional representatives and hindering a lawmaking procedure.

His lawyer entered the response representing him in a national courtroom in Alexandria, Virginia on Wednesday morning.

His attorney declared he would try to have the proceedings thrown out for multiple reasons including that his defendant, a opponent of President Donald Trump, was being targeted.

The former director was indicted soon after Trump pressured his attorney general to proceed against him.

Judicial Process

At the proceedings on Wednesday, Comey's lawyer the legal representative informed the judge they intended to present several legal requests to throw out the legal matter before a legal hearing, stating the prosecution was spiteful and that a federal prosecutor was unlawfully appointed to take over the case.

Mr Comey's legal matter was first handled by a Virginia prosecutor, who stepped down under pressure from the former president after his probe into an additional opponent - the New York official - did not succeed to file indictments.

Legal Setting

James Comey came across in good spirits as he entered the court on Wednesday, conversing with his attorneys and sharing humor. He was accompanied by his spouse, Mrs Failor and offspring Maureen Comey, a US lawyer who the previous administration dismissed.

After listening to the judge state his rights and the dual charges against him in the courtroom on mid-week, the defendant was inquired if he comprehended the allegations.

"I do your honour. Thank you," he informed the proceedings.

Historical Information

James Comey was the chief of the Federal Bureau of Investigation from 2013 to 2017 and was fired about four months into the former president's first term as national leader. At the moment, Mr Comey was overseeing an examination into Russian election interference and whether there were any links between Russia and Trump's campaign.

While in office, the director triggered a counter-response from liberal politicians when he stated just immediately preceding the 2016 presidential election that he was examining political contender the candidate's use of a personal email system. Charges against Clinton were not pursued, resulting in disapproval from the Republican party as well.

Ongoing Accusations

Prosecutors assert the former director gave untrue statements to Congress during a legislative proceeding in 2020 when he was being interrogated about both the email probe as well as the Russia election probe. They say he misled the upper house by stating he had not approved a person at the FBI to leak to media organizations information about the FBI investigations.

Government lawyers also accuse James Comey of "improperly attempting to sway, obstruct and impede" the committee by giving misleading testimony to it.

Personal Comments

In a video James Comey posted to his Instagram after he was accused, he declared he was wrongly accused and alleged Trump of conducting himself like a "tyrant".

"Our household have known for a long time that there are consequences to standing up to the former president," he said. "We will not live on our knees."
"I am not guilty," he added. "So let's have a trial."

The charges against the former director came after Donald Trump shared on digital channels demanding his top legal official, Pam Bondi, prosecute the former director and other people.
