German Far-Right Dictating the Political Narrative, Study Reveals
Mainstream parties in power are increasingly enabling the radical right to dictate the political agenda, as per a recent research conducted in the Federal Republic of Germany.
Academics discovered that this phenomenon has unwittingly helped far-right parties by legitimising their ideas and disseminating them more widely.
Study Based on Two Decades of News Reporting
The results, published in the European Journal of Political Research, relied on an computerized content review of over 520,000 news pieces from six German publications.
Berlin-based researchers observed that as the radical faction shifted from fringe issues in the 1990s era to core subjects like assimilation and immigration, mainstream parties increasingly adjusted their messaging in response.
This adjustment boosted the dissemination of these concepts and signaled to the electorate that such stances were acceptable.
Consequences for Democratic Systems
"Political communication by mainstream parties is crucial in the electoral success of the radical right," stated a expert in political behavior involved in the study.
"This factor has been overlooked," she noted.
The effect was noticeable even when conventional parties were criticising the radical faction. "You're still giving them attention," the researcher remarked. "The main point is that because we live in such a battle for attention, this focus is crucial."
Mainstreaming Phenomenon Across Europe
While the study was focused on Germany, this mainstreaming phenomenon is probable to affect nations across Europe.
"You see this a lot in German and British media," explained another researcher. "The far right makes a statement and everyone begins discussing it for several days."
"Even if you're countering it, you're echoing it," he stated.
Toughening of Political Discourse
At times, political figures have also hardened their discourse to align with that of the far right.
In a recent discussion, a then German chancellor advocated widespread deportations and urged them to happen "more often and faster."
Similar instances can be observed across Europe, as elected officials from nations ranging from the United Kingdom to the French Republic embrace the language of the radical right, especially on migration.
This has formed an echo chamber that was inconceivable a ten years prior.
Central Issue: Who Dictates the Narrative?
"{If you're a centrist party and you are talking about societal topics – immigration, integration – in a way that is determined by the rhythm of the radical right, that's the essence of narrative control," explained a study author.
Other political parties have gone one step further, attempting to emulate the hardline platform of the far right, despite studies suggests that doing so drives voters to cast their ballot for the radical faction.
Gradual Impact and Voter Awareness
The extent of information gathered revealed that the impact of radical parties had been gradual and had grown with the passage of time.
"Voter awareness doesn't change from day to day," stated a researcher. "However, when you hear this negative framing around migration every second week, and it is being spread not only by far-right parties but also, for example, by mainstream political organizations, then of course this narrative travels further."
Requirement for Mainstream Groups to Develop Their Own Discourses
The study highlighted the need for established political parties to develop their distinct discourses, particularly on topics such as migration and assimilation, rather than constantly following the far right.
"It resembles a choreography," said one author. "If the conductor is far-right and you're reacting to it, you cannot decide which tune should be playing."
